Your Responsibilities
Preventing Infection

If you smoke, you must quit immediately. Smoking includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, marijuana, inhaling cocaine and chewing tobacco. Stopping these activities is necessary to prevent serious respiratory infection that could lead to life-threatening pneumonia or fungal infection when your immune system is severely weakened by chemotherapy and transplant.

  1. Smoking marijuana could lead to potentially fatal lung infections.
  2. No one should smoke inside your home and avoid second hand smoke in public.

VCH is a smoke free environment. This includes the grounds at the hospital. There are many effective aids to help you stop smoking. If you need assistance with quitting smoking, please talk to your doctor or nurse.
